Fuvahmulah is a unique island in the southern Maldives, world-famous for thrilling big-animal diving and extraordinary pelagic encounters.


Known as the Tiger Shark Capital of the Maldives, it offers year-round opportunities to see tiger sharks, along with thresher sharks, hammerheads, oceanic manta rays, whale sharks, and eagle rays.


Beyond the diving, Fuvahmulah offers lush tropical scenery, local island culture, beautiful beaches, freshwater lakes, and a more authentic Maldivian experience

Fuvahmulah is world-famous for year-round tiger shark encounters, especially at its iconic Tiger Harbor dive site. Its deep offshore waters can also deliver thresher sharks, scalloped hammerheads, oceanic manta rays, whale sharks, grey reef sharks, silvertip sharks, eagle rays, tuna, barracuda, and other spectacular pelagic marine life.

This is not a typical reef-diving destination. Fuvahmulah is all about dramatic blue water, open-ocean drop-offs, strong pelagic action, and unforgettable shark encounters.

Diving is excellent year-round, with tiger sharks present throughout the year.


 Thresher sharks and hammerheads are most commonly seen from January through April, while other pelagic encounters may vary depending on conditions, currents, and season.

Visibility

Fuvahmulah is known for blue-water descents, offshore currents, and drift diving. Conditions can range from moderate to strong, making it best suited to confident divers with good buoyancy control and experience in open-water conditions. Dive sites are chosen daily based on weather, current, and diver experience.

Water temperatures remain consistently warm throughout the year, averaging 27°C to 29°C (80°F to 84°F).

Fuvahmulah is primarily a boat-diving destination rather than a traditional house-reef destination. Most signature shark and pelagic dive sites are reached by short boat rides from the harbor, providing fast access to deep-water channels and ocean-facing drop-offs.

Fuvahmulah is a local island, and modest dress is expected in public areas. There is currently no designated bikini beach, so visitors should wear a T-shirt and shorts or other modest swimwear when visiting public beaches. Swimwear is generally appropriate on dive boats and within private guesthouse areas.

The island has guesthouses, cafés, and local restaurants serving Maldivian specialties, fresh seafood, Asian dishes, and international favorites. Smaller establishments may prefer cash payments, so carrying some Maldivian rufiyaa or United States dollars is recommended.

Fuvahmulah is a warm, welcoming Muslim community. Visitors should dress respectfully outside their accommodations, cover shoulders and knees in public areas, and be mindful of local customs. Alcohol is not available on local islands.

How to Get There

Guests fly internationally to Velana International Airport in Malé (MLE), then connect by domestic flight to Fuvahmulah Airport (FVM). The domestic flight typically takes approximately one and a half hours. Premier Aquatic Adventures can assist with domestic flights, airport transfers, accommodation, dive arrangements, and complete travel planning.

Fuvahmulah has a domestic airport, dive centers, guesthouses, cafés, restaurants, small shops, banking services, ATMs, and a local hospital. It is more developed than many smaller local islands while still maintaining an authentic Maldivian atmosphere. A United States dollar ATM was added in late 2025, although carrying some cash remains helpful for smaller purchases.

SAFETY INFORMATION

Diving Insurance

Comprehensive dive insurance covering diving-related medical treatment, hyperbaric care, and emergency evacuation is strongly required for all divers traveling with Premier Aquatic Adventures. Guests should carry proof of coverage before arrival.
